Committee Roles and Responsibilities

  • Major Gift Committee (Jan Walch + David Kerpel)
    • Initiates and maintains relationships with donors
    • Maintains donor database
    • Registers for donor database (once FHDS obtains its 501c(3) status)
    • Communicates with Fundraising and Grant Writer Chairs to avoid overlap
  • Grant Writer Committee (Jan Walch)
    • Researches and applies for grants
    • Researches and applies to obtain money from family foundations
    • Communicates with Fundraising and Major Gifts Chairs to avoid overlap
  • Fundraising Committee (David Kerpel)
    • Creates a fundraising plan and presents it to the Board for Board approval (including Giving Tuesday, direct mailers)
    • Oversees the planning of fundraisers (auctions, raffles, sponsorships, sales of goods, etc)
    • Communicates with Grant Writer and Major Gifts Chairs to avoid overlap
    • Recruits members for Advisory Board
  • Construction/Buildings and Maintenance Committee (Heidi Sparacino)
    • Oversees construction and landscaping plans
    • Creates a plan/design for any kennels, indoor play areas and employee housing and coordinates with/oversees any companies necessary for executing the plan.
    • Creates a plan/design for any outdoor areas used by the nonprofit and coordinates with/oversees any companies necessary for executing the plan.  This includes, but is not limited to roads, fencing, and utilities
    • Once construction is complete, oversees maintenance of structures and property used by FHDS (including repairs that need to be completed, snow removal, lawn care, etc)
  • Communications/Marketing Committee (David Kerpel)
    • Creates a communications plan
    • Oversees website development
    • Oversees/creates social media posts on
    • Creates content and maintains presence on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc…)
      • Takes photos at events to post on social media platforms
    • Oversees/creates newsletter
    • Creates branding materials
    • Coordinates with Fundraising Chair to create marketing material for upcoming events
  • Volunteer Committee (Erin Kerpel)
    • Coordinates volunteer shifts
    • Creates a list of volunteer duties
    • Tracks volunteer hours
    • Maintains volunteer background checks, applications, liability waivers, confidentiality statements
    • Coordinates volunteer training sessions
  • Supplies Committee (Heidi Sparacino)
    • Tracks supplies and orders additional supplies needed
    • Creates list of day-to-day supplies that will be needed
  • Health Committee (Erin Kerpel)
    • Coordinates with vet to ensure all dogs are up to date on their vaccinations and physicals
    • Coordinates with trainers to work with dogs with behavioral issues
    • Works with vets to make sure that any dogs with medical needs have their needs met
    • Ensures that all dogs are microchipped
    • Develops Policies and Procedures for what dogs to accept
    • Creates and maintains spreadsheet tracking dogs’ medical care
  • Outreach Committee (Erin Kerpel)
    • Forms and maintains relationships with vets, animal shelters, rescue groups and sanctuaries
  • Foster/Adoption (David Kerpel)
    • Coordinates the foster/adoption process:
      • Facilitates posting of dogs
      • Background checks of potential parents
      • Home visitsEnsures parents sign forms
      • Checks on progress
